Youth Athlete Spotlight - April
Donovan Horvat – Black Belt
What got you started in martial arts? What keeps in involved? Recognizing my boundless energy, my parents knew I needed an outlet and started me in karate very early age of 2½. It was challenging at first, but I liked staying active daily. My training now combines dedicated sessions at the dojo with a rigorous practice routine at home. It's a pursuit that keeps me grounded, focused, and always striving to be the best version of myself.
What's the most epic pre-competition meal you've ever had? While I focus on high-energy snacks before a match, the moment that final buzzer sounds, my body craves a full-blown feast. My post-fight cravings lean towards a fiesta on a plate. Tacos piled high with seasoned rice, black beans, and juicy chicken are my go-to.
Imagine you're giving a pep talk to your younger self just starting out in karate. What's the one piece of advice you'd give them? Sure, everyone can train hard. You'll learn sick kicks and punches that will have your classmates cheering. But the real difference-maker? Mastering your mind.
See, fear, doubt, and even excitement can get the best of you during training or competition. But just like you practice your blocks and strikes, you can train your mind to stay focused and in control.
