Youth Athlete Spotlight - March
Serafina Fish – Black Belt
What got you started in the Martial Arts? What keeps you involved? When I was 5 years old, I informed my parents that I wanted to quite dance class to begin Karate. For weeks I walked around the house karate chopping everything and everyone, while begging my parents to sign me up for Karate. That summer my parents let me retire my dance shoes for a Karate Gi. It was years later that I shared with them that my interest in Karate came from watching a SpongeBob Square Pants episode called Karate Island.
I used to say I train in the Martial Arts, now I say I am a Martial Artist. Training in the Martial Arts has instilled life traits like discipline, respect, self-confidence, and focus. I also love to compete in Sport Karate. I have participated in team sports, like basketball and lacrosse, but my passion is challenging myself while competing vs another competitor.
What is the most epic pre-competition meal that you have ever had? Pre-competition meals are a personal ritual for many athletes. My go-to pre-game meal is a Moe's Burrito, because I find it provides the perfect balance of carbs for energy, protein for muscle repair, and healthy fats to keep me feeling full and focused.
Imagine you are giving a pep talk to your younger self, just starting out in karate. What is the one piece of advice you would give? The life skills you will learn from martial arts will help you throughout your life. I also would tell my younger self to follow the process. Listen, learn, and be patient. The Martial Arts is a journey that truly begins once you earn your Black Belt.
